Lunch with Brian

The Rio Grande, February 13, 2009

For Friday the 13th lunch, Brian and I went to Rio Grande. That's the place where The Real World Austin was filmed except now it's not a house, it's a restaurant. Last time we went there, I wanted the Enchiladas Del Mar and saw them on the Friday lunch special, but it wasn't Friday, so I was stuck paying full price. This time it was Friday, but I didn't want the Enchiladas Del Mar. Go figure.

Just out of curiosity, I was looking for the specials for other days. They have general lunch specials that apply to all days, but I thought if they had Friday specials, they'd have Thursday specials and Monday specials, etc. Brian said they only have Friday specials that are seafood dishes on account of Catholicism.

The Tacos al Carbon was on the everyday lunch special menu. I asked the waitress what the difference was in the lunch special and the regular meal. She said, "It's cheaper?" Oh. That sounded good, so I got it.

Brian ordered a Mahi Mahi Salad with Citrus Vinaigrette. Everytime he orders that, I have to ask him how to spell vinaigrette for my lunch notes.

Brian didn't think the music was authentic Tex-Mex music. He said, "This doesn't sound anything like the Chicken Dance."

To drink, I got a Tornado. That's Sierra Mist and fresh, pulverized strawberries mixed in. It's really yummy. Brian asked if it had Fresca in it which lead down a few paths of conversation:

  • I told Brian that I used to like Fresca when it had saccharin in it. But then they started putting nutrasweet in it and ruined it.
  • Brian asked if Fresca has different flavors, but I didn't think it did. I thought it just had that one grapefruity flavor. He wondered if maybe he was thinking of Fanta. Turns out Fresca does have more than one flavor, but if they all have nutrasweet in them, I'm sure they are equally bad. Unless you like nutrasweet, of course.
  • Brian said that if you mix Fresca with Carlo Rossi Sangria, it tastes like sangria. I asked if Carlo Rossi Sangria doesn't taste like sangria, and he said it does... it just tastes like bad sangria.

Rio Grande has lots of different ceiling lamps and sconces. The one at our table was truly ugly and looked like it was sprouting hair. I didn't take a picture of it, but I took a picture of this pretty fountain.
